Best of student athletics fêted at Lancer banquet

Kelsey Balkwill and John Moate were multiple award winners and walked away with the top two prizes at the Lancer Evening of Excellence, Thursday at the St. Clair Centre of the Arts.

Balkwill received the Banner Shield and Moate the Olympic shield as UWindsor Athletes of the Year.

Balkwill, a master’s student of human kinetics, joined the Lancer track and field team this year and racked up a slew of awards while leading the Windsor women to a second-place finish at the Ontario University Athletics meet and third at the national championships. She won four medals — individual gold in the 300m and 600m events and silver as part of the 4x200m and 4x400m relay squads — at the provincial tournament to claim MVP honours. At the national meet, Balkwill was named most outstanding performer after anchoring the 4x400m relay team to a new school record, again winning the 300m and 600m races, and earning silver in the 4x200m relay.

Moate is just the second Lancer ever named an all-Canadian in men’s volleyball after leading his team to its first-ever appearance in the national tournament. An OUA all-star, the middle blocker finished atop the league in blocks, averaging 1.26 per set. He appeared in all 17 matches for the Blue and Gold and ended the season with a .429 hitting percentage and totals of 135 kills, 87 blocks, and 206 points.

Mike Rocca of men’s basketball won his second and thrower Sarah Mitton from the women’s track and field team her first DeMarco Award, presented annually to Lancers who best combine academic achievement with athletic prowess.
