It was a tough fight, but two DailyNews readers emerged triumphant from Tuesday’s quiz contest offering an enamel poppy pin as a prize.
Respondents were almost evenly divided over which World War 1 battle qualifies as largest fought on the Western front, but the judgement is clear — with more than 3 million combatants and 1 million casualties, the Battle of the Somme was the largest.
Drama professor Gail Murray and second-year criminology student Owen Stichhaller had their entries drawn from all those which came up with the correct answer to that question, as well as identifying Vimy as the first battle in which the four Canadian divisions fought side by side, and Ypres as the first use of chlorine gas in the war.
They will each receive a permanent keepsake “Lest We Forget” brooch, donated by the family of public affairs staffer Renée Bombardier, just in time for Remembrance Day.
