Drama, comedy, Canadian history, and a touching love story are all wrapped up in the University Players’ production of Queen Milli of Galt, running November 25 through December 4 in the Essex Hall Theatre.

In a charming and warm romantic drama-comedy inspired by real events, playwright Gary Kirkham delivers a touching and funny story proving that some loves last forever.

After the death of the Duke of Windsor (formerly King Edward VIII) in 1972, an 80 year-old woman from Galt — now part of the city of Cambridge, Ontario — had her tombstone engraved, naming herself as his wife. The tale begins when the handsome prince visits Canada in the autumn of 1919 and meets the feisty and irresistible young Milli.

Queen Milli of Galt is the winner of the 2004 Samuel French Canadian Playwriting Contest. Kirkham will attend the opening night performance in Essex Hall.

Wednesday through Saturday performances are at 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday matinees are at 2 p.m. On Sunday, November 27, a free “Talk Back” discussion with the actors will follow the performance.
