A session to help high school students adjust to post-secondary education is a new addition to the University’s open house on March 5.

“The suggestion came out of our advisory board of guidance counsellors,” says Lionel Walsh, assistant vice-president for North American recruitment. “They were hearing from so many students who didn’t know what to expect and asked whether we can do something to make them feel more prepared.”

Walsh, who will conduct the “Transition to University” session at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Toldo Health Education Centre, says he will try to make it fun and informative.

“Many of these students have very basic questions, like ‘what’s the difference between a major and a minor?’ and ‘what’s a prerequisite class?’” he says. “We tell them their professors will be accessible, but they ask how to claim that access.”

He knows there is a lot of material to cover and will keep a view to answering individual questions.

“I don’t want to get into too much detail,” says Walsh. “They will have additional opportunities at Head Start orientation. The main idea here is to help them understand how and where to get help.”
