Faculty of Nursing professor Maher El-Masri was recently appointed editor-in-chief of the Canadian Journal of Nursing Research.

Dr. El-Masri is a faculty research chair and teaches primarily biostatistics and clinical epidemiology. He is co-chair of the Determinants of Health Group of the Windsor-Detroit Cross-Border Research Initiative, and holds an adjunct appointment with Western University’s Schulich School of Medicine – Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics. He has also been a visiting scholar with the College of Nursing and Professional Disciplines at the University of North Dakota since 2012.

El-Masri is a founding member of the Windsor Cancer Research Group, a multidisciplinary group of local cancer, and is a member of the SouthWestern Academic Health Network’s Knowledge Generation and Translation Committee, where he also co-chairs the “Choosing-Wisely” working group. He serves as academic research lead at Windsor’s Vascular and Kidney Care and Research Institute; is a member of the Research Ethics Board at Windsor Regional Hospital; and serves on the Chief Nurse Executives and Clinical Leads Advisory Committee for the Erie St. Clair Local Health Integration Network.

Faculty of Nursing dean Linda Patrick calls the editorial appointment “… a testament to Maher’s contributions to the journal during his appointment as an editor over the past three years.”

Since joining the UWindsor faculty in 2002, El-Masri has received a number of teaching and research awards, including the Registered Nurses’ Association of Ontario’s Leadership in Nursing Research Award; UWindsor’s Mid-Career and Emerging Scholar awards; the Faculty of Nursing 2003 Award for Excellence in Teaching, Research and Service; the Medical Surgical Journal’s Research for Practice award; and the University of Windsor Award for Excellence in Research and Creative Activity.

The journal, established by McGill University in 1969 and recently acquired by Sage Publications Inc., publishes original nursing research and examines the application of nursing knowledge in practice.
