In 1921, Agnes Macphail became the first woman elected to Canada’s House of Commons. A champion of many causes, including the rights of women, immigrants, minors, prisoners, and farmers, she was a long-serving leader whose political contributions shaped 20th-century Canada.

Women’s and gender studies lecturer Renée Bondy will examine Macphail’s remarkable life and impressive political career in a webinar Wednesday presented by Canada’s History magazine. The magazine’s fall webinar series is focused on women’s history, which Dr. Bondy calls a timely topic.

“Given the Trudeau government’s commitment to gender parity, this seems like a fitting time to reflect on pioneering women in Canadian politics,” she says.
