University announces transportation options for downtown campus

A mix of secured parking and enhanced transit options will provide convenient access to users of the UWindsor’s downtown campus opening this fall, says Anna Kirby, executive director of campus services.

“We are very excited to be able to offer students and employees parking just steps from the Pitt/Ferry building,” Kirby said. “It adds to the public transit, biking and pedestrian choices to make this site as accessible as our main campus.”

Parking permits that went on sale June 8 will be restricted to occupants of the downtown site. They provide for access to the parking garage directly west of the Pitt/Ferry building at the same rate as the parking structure on main campus. A Compark lot located south of University Avenue between Church Street and Dougall Avenue offers student parking permits at the same cost as those on the main campus.

Holders of permits for both the ground lot and parking garage will also be able to use the parking lot at Askin and University avenues while visiting main campus

The Parking Services office will handle the sale and administration of both ground and parking garage permits, just as it does for on-campus parking.

Transit Windsor has increased the frequency of buses between the main campus and downtown on two relevant routes—the Transway 1C along University Avenue and the Crosstown 2 along Wyandotte Street. Buses run weekdays:

  • 7 to 9 a.m. every 10 minutes;
  • 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. every 15 minutes;
  • 2 to 6 p.m. every 10 minutes;
  • after 6 p.m. every 30 minutes.

“Our buses provide a quick way to shuttle between the University’s main campus and downtown,” says Transit Windsor executive director Pat Delmore. “We are looking forward to proving just how convenient public transit can be.”

Transit Windsor has also launched a trip planning tool that combines the latest bus schedule and route information with the power of Google Maps. This free service puts transit information at your fingertips. Access it to determine routes and times for your trips.

Kirby points out that the distance between the two campuses is a brisk 35-minute walk or a 10-minute bike ride through dedicated lanes on University Avenue.

“We are also in the process of establishing a student-run Bike Share program,” she says. “We hope to provide updates on its progress soon.”
