Windsor jumper recognized as rookie of the year

If the Lancer men hope to win a national team title during the Canadian Interuniversity Sport track and field championships this weekend, they’ll need a big meet from Angelo Bortolin.

The jumps specialist was named CIS rookie of the year at Thursday’s awards ceremony, following what head coach Dennis Fairall called a memorable first season.

“Not only is he the top-ranked Lancer in the triple jump, but his jump of 14.71 metres ranks him third in CIS,” Fairall said. “Combine this with a 7.0m long jump and he is the top rookie in two events. He will play a big role if the Lancers hope to win the national team title.”

The meet began yesterday and will continue through Saturday at the St. Denis Centre. Lancers Jesse Drennan and Branden Wilhelm won silver and bronze, respectively, in the pentathlon. Find a recap of the first day's competition at goLancers.ca. Selected events will be webcast throughout the championships on www.CIS-SIC.tv.
