Thursday’s Celebration of Excellence in Research, Scholarship and Creative Activity provided an opportunity to note the accomplishments of the University’s academics, K. W. Michael Siu said in welcoming guests.
“Research permeates everything that we do, from teaching in the classroom as we enrich students’ learning environment by drawing on our experience and the fruits of our inquiry … to collaborating with our partners whether they be academic or industry,” said Dr. Siu, vice-president, research and innovation.
The event featured the conferral of awards in several categories, as well as recognition of external grants, patents and other honours.
Law professor Jasminka Kalajdzic called her selection to receive attention as an emerging scholar “quite satisfying” given the numbers of her colleagues who could have won.
“I am flattered to have been given the award this year,” she said. “It is encouraging to know that our hard work does not go unnoticed.”
Laura Chittle, now pursuing master’s studies in kinesiology, was named outstanding undergraduate student for her earlier work on the relative age effect in sport. She has submitted several papers for presentation and publication, co-authored with professors Jess Dixon and Sean Horton.
“It is an honour to be recognized by my faculty and the university, especially given all the great work being produced by students,” she said.
