Lancer teams rack up weekend wins

Captain Korissa Williams scored a game-high 21 points as the Lancer women’s basketball team defeated the Guelph Gryphons 76-53, Saturday in the St. Denis Centre. It was the first home game for the Windsor side this season; players received rings commemorating their 2014 Canadian Interuniversity Sport championship in a pre-game ceremony before more than 1,000 fans. Rotimi Osuntola Jr. notched 17 points and 10 rebounds—the game’s only double-double—to lead the Lancer men’s basketball team to a 92-75 win over Guelph on Saturday. Teammate Khalid Abdel-Gabar also had 17 points, while Alex Campbell (14), Mike Rocca (13) and Mitch Farrell (12) each reached double digits. Read “No. 5 Lancers defeat Gryphons in home opener.”

Both Lancer squads boast 2-0 records to lead the Ontario University Athletics west division. They will travel to Toronto next weekend to play the Varsity Blues on Friday, November 14, and the Ryerson Rams on Saturday, November 15.

The men’s hockey team came home from its foray to Toronto with a pair of victories to extend its season-opening winning streak to 11. Drew Palmer scored in double overtime Friday to give Windsor a 3-2 edge over Ryerson. Dylan Denomme and Daulton Siwak accounted for Windsor’s other goals. Rookie Shailyn Waites recorded a hat trick and veteran Candice Chevalier added two more to lead the Lancer women’s hockey team to a 5-2 win over the York Lions at South Windsor Arena on Friday. The Lancer men’s cross country team finished fifth overall the national championship meet Saturday in St. John’s, Newfoundland. Corey Bellemore was the first Windsor runner across the line, finishing the race in a time of 34:10.6. Read a full recap at goLancers.ca.
