Manager and clerk wait on Bookstore patron.Whether it was Peps mint chocolate patties, a pack of unfiltered cigarettes or handy pipe cleaners, the 1960s era Bookstore in the basement of the University Centre stocked all student necessities.

Bookstore’s move “right back to where we started from”

The University Bookstore is closed this week as staff moves its stock, paperwork and equipment to the newly-renovated location on the lower level of the CAW Student Centre, but marketing coordinator Martin Deck says it’s not entirely correct to call it a new location.

The Bookstore has inhabited several locations across the University’s 50-year history, including the last two years in Vanier Hall, a long-time stint as the south wing of the Odette Building, and an earlier incarnation in the basement of Leddy Library’s West Building.

“Very few people, however, remember the original University of Windsor Bookstore, on the lower level of the University Centre, as it was then called,” Deck says. “It was originally located in the room that later became the game room and is now the Student Centre Pharmacy.”

The space was designed by Douglas Buckner, and looked like this:

The new Campus Bookstore will open at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, July 23. The Bookstore’s kiosk on the main floor of the CAW Student Centre will operate throughout the move, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Orders can also be placed online at www.bookstore.uwindsor.ca.
