Digital literacy, contemporary communication capabilities, and independent learning are all key elements of preparing students for the challenges they will face after graduation, says Alan Wright, vice-provost, teaching and learning. A move to adopt the Blackboard learning management platform will support that task, he said.

“We need to invest in technologies that facilitate new ways of teaching and learning, and align with the strategic directions of the University,” said Dr. Wright.

Bala Kathiresan, executive director of Information Technology Services, cited the company’s industry leadership and comprehensive student assessment tools as driving factors in the product’s selection.

“The power of the Blackboard platform will allow us to engage a new audience for our courses, and to support our students, who may be anywhere in the world, helping to break down the barriers of geography and access,” he said. “With Blackboard, instructors will be able to imagine and achieve new ways of engaging students with online and blended learning. Additionally, implementing Blackboard leverages our Connecting Windsor Essex relationships as we build on St. Clair College’s existing contract with Blackboard.”

The company will also provide consulting services and training to University officials and faculty to help implement best practices for platform implementation and delivery. The platform will also integrate seamlessly into the University’s Student Information System so course and enrollment information will automatically populate within the learning environment.
