Support available for stressed students

There are many campus supports available for students suffering from increased stress during exams, says Mohsan Beg, clinical director of the Student Counselling Centre.

“It’s normal for students to experience some anxiety during the pressures of exam time, but if they are really in distress, we want them to know—help is available,” Dr. Beg says. “Sometimes talking to a fellow student who has been through the same high stress experience of exam time can be very helpful. The Peer Support Centre is a great resource where students can talk to peers about some of the pressures they are experiencing.”

For some students the stress of exams can exacerbate other underlying issues and contribute to more serious symptoms of depression or anxiety that become overwhelming, he says. In these more serious cases, the Student Counselling Centre, staffed by mental health professionals, would be the appropriate office to seek assistance. Student Health Services is another good resource for students who may be experiencing negative physical effects of increased or prolonged stress.

The Peer Support Centre is located in room 208, CAW Student Centre; e-mail psc@uwindsor.ca or phone 519-253-3000, ext. 4551.
