Award winners recognized for contributions to campus

Debbie Bastien takes safety seriously. A custodian responsible for Chrysler Hall Tower, she received the Excellence in Health and Safety Award at a reception Wednesday celebrating winners of UWindsor Employee Recognition Awards.

Bastien said for her, safety is all in a day’s work.

“I always wear my safety jacket and just do the things I have to do so students can come and go without any worry,” she said. “I would feel terrible if someone got hurt in my area.”

Rita LaCivita, chief human resources officer, read a number of testimonials to Bastien’s ethic, praising her focus and exemplary commitment: “Debbie has had a positive impact on our department as we often consider safety through her hands-on example.”

“Shocked” by the recognition, Bastien said she appreciated the recognition. In addition to a certificate and a gift, she received a bouquet of flowers from occupants of offices in her purview.

“It made me feel very wanted,” she said. “I have been here for 22 years and I thank God for my job every day.”

Director of teaching and learning development Erika Kustra, who won the Excellence in Leadership Award, said she was moved to learn her colleagues submitted her nomination.

“I have a wonderful group to work with,” she said, adding that the reception is an opportunity to note the amazing contributions made by campus employees. “I think this event helps us feel like what we do matters.”

  • “U” Make a Difference Award—Lisa Fransen, career advising coordinator, Odette School of Business;
