University Players presents a magical holiday production of the classic children’s fairy tale Sleeping Beauty by Rufus Norris, November 21 to 24 and November 27 to December 1, at Essex Hall Theatre.
Once upon a time there was a beautiful princess who was loved by everyone. Well…almost everyone. This gleefully gruesome retelling of the classic fable is from the point of view of the mischievous, flatulent Fairy Goody, a smelly old sprite who casts a spell that sends Beauty into a deep sleep. Expect fairy tale romance, hideous ogres, sinister spells, and a holiday show like no other!
This version of Sleeping Beauty is a refreshing and funny take on the familiar story, and is loosely based upon the original 17th-century fairy tale. Directed by faculty member Brian Taylor, it promises to be a fantastical, audience-friendly show, filled with outstanding stagecraft and live music.
Wednesday through Saturday performances are at 8 p.m., Sunday matinees are at 2 p.m. On Sunday, November 24, a “Talk Back” discussion with the director and actors will follow the performance.

Let’s Talk Theatre
The production of Sleeping Beauty will also mark the first event in this season’s Let’s Talk Theatre, a luncheon-lecture series produced by University Players and Uni-Com. The goal of the series is to provide opportunities to learn more about University Players and its productions.
The three-course lunch will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, November 24, at Assumption University’s Freed-Orman Centre. Director Brian Taylor will talk about the show and answer questions.
Tickets are $25 and can be purchased by calling the box office at 519-253-3000, ext. 2808. The series continues with another luncheon prior to Three Sisters on March 9, 2014. Discounts are available for those buying both lunches together.
