Symposium to consider future of Windsor-Detroit region

Picture the Windsor-Detroit region 10 years from now. What will it be like? What do you want it to be like? These questions frame this year’s Wayne-Windsor Symposium to be held in Vanier Hall’s Katzman Lounge on Friday, October 18.

For better or worse, the bankruptcy of the City of Detroit is a turning point. The Detroit that emerges from bankruptcy will affect the future of the greater region.

Among the topics under discussion are: arts and culture in an urban renaissance, integrating trade and movement across an international border, community organization and activism, and the shared history of the Detroit-Windsor region.

Presentations commence at 9:00 a.m., with lunch beginning at noon followed by the keynote address by Detroit Free Press journalist John Gallagher, author of “Reimagining Detroit.”

Other panelists include:

  • Bill Anderson, Research Chair in Cross-Border Transportation
  • Luther Keith, executive director of Arise Detroit
  • Siobhan Clare Gregory, professor of art at Wayne State University

There is no charge to attend the symposium, but organizers require early registration to order sufficient refreshments and lunch. To register, e-mail Kelley Allard at kallard@uwindsor.ca or polsci@uwindsor.ca.

The political science department is celebrating its 50th anniversary on October 18 as well. For more information on the department’s 50th anniversary events, visit http://www.uwindsor.ca/polsci/50th-anniversary.
