2013 Alumni Sports Hall of Fame relocated to Caesars Windsor

The University of Windsor’s 2013 Alumni Association Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremony will take place on Sunday, Oct. 6 starting at 1 p.m. in the Augustus Ballroom of Caesars Windsor.
The Awards were established in 1986 to honour men and women who have significantly contributed to University of Windsor athletics and/or who have exemplified the spirit and ideals of University of Windsor Sports in any other endeavours.
The 2013 recipients of the Sport Achievement Award are:

 

  • Jack Schroeder (BA ‘65, BPE ’68, MEd ’91). Schroeder was an Ontario finalist in baseball, lacrosse, Junior AKO football, track and field and lob-ball. He was a swim teach coach at Massey Secondary School, leading his students to an OFSAA championship in both 1970 and 1979. He spent more than 40 years as a referee for both basketball and football and was named Official of the Year in 1994.
  • Philip Haddad  (BA ’66).  Haddad coached the St. Anthony Junior High School basketball team from 1962 to 1966, with the team reaching league finalist status in 1962 and performing as undefeated champions for the following three years. Haddad was also head coach of the Riverside Bantam baseball team, which was a provincial finalist in 1973. Haddad is the Volunteer Executive Director of Riverside Baseball Centre – the umbrella organization of Riverside Minor Baseball Association; Riverside Volleyball Association; Windsor-Riverside Golf Association; Riverside Fun Camps; and the Windsor-Riverside Athletic Organization.

The 2013 Alumni Sports Hall of Fame inductees are:

 

  • Andy Auch (BSc ’69, Bed ’74, MEd ’77), a basketball player who was a member of the CIAU national championship team during the 1966/67 and 1968/69 seasons. He was named to the OQAA first all-star team in 1969 and was recipient of the 1968/69 DeMarco Award as top student athlete.
  • Valerie Hamel (BA ’04), a hockey player who is a two-time recipient of the Banner Shield as Female Athlete of the Year. Hamel is a three-time OUA All-Star; three-time CIS Academic All-Canadian, and the recipient of the 2001/02 DeMarco Award as top student athlete. She is all-time second in career scoring for Lancer women’s hockey with 87 goals.
  • Gerald Hlady (BHK ’91, Bed ’92), a football players who is a two-time CIS All-Canadian. He is a three-time recipient of the DeMarco Award as top student athlete and three-time Academic All-Canadian. He was a Russ Jackson Award national finalist for athletics, academics and community service.
  • Ed Petryshyn (BA’64), a basketball and baseball player and member of the CIAU national championship team during the 1962/63 and 1963/64 seasons. During his four-year Lancer career he was a leading team rebounder and was an outstanding multi-sport athlete.

The 2013 Team Achievement Awards will go to:

 

  • The Women’s 1967/68 and 1969/70 basketball teams;
  • The Women’s 1967/68 and 1968/69 swim teams.
