Women’s soccer team earns split to open season

The Lancer women’s soccer team opened its 2013 season on a winning note Saturday, defeating the York Lions 1-0 at Alumni Field. Rookie forward Becca Fuerth buried a rebound on a free kick in the 75th minute of play for the game’s lone goal. Windsor keeper Tara Benard-Rae earned the shutout.

On the men’s side, Cristian Mayorga scored Windsor’s only goal in a season-opening 2-1 loss to York on Saturday, and Joseph Camaj’s single for the Lancers held up to tie Western on Sunday.

Both soccer teams are back at Alumni Field next weekend to host Laurier and UOIT on Saturday and Sunday respectively.

The Lancer football team dropped a heartbreaker on Labour Day 24-23 to the Guelph Gryphons, ranked seventh in the country coming into the contest. A field goal with less than a minute to play sealed the steal for Guelph, moving Windsor to 1-1 on the season.

Lancer quarterback Austin Kennedy passed for 371 yards, including two touchdowns, as part of 434 total offense versus just 239 for Guelph. Windsor recorded better numbers in almost every category but the final score.

The squad will travel to Kingston on Saturday to meet the Queen’s Gaels, currently ranked second in Canadian Interuniversity Sport. Windsor is back at home on Saturday, September 14, when they host the Carleton Ravens on Alumni Field.
