Students, faculty and staff of Windsor Law will join a walk to raise money for the homeless and the hungry on Saturday, February 23. It’s part of a national project—local monies will go to Windsor’s Downtown Mission.

Professor Larry Wilson, who serves on the mission’s board of directors, says the need for its services is growing.

“Last year the mission served in excess of 130,000 meals, provided 6,570 safe nights of accommodation, provided clothing to 5,000 individuals and trained more than 50 individuals in the culinary assistant program to help them back into the workforce,” he says.

Devyn Coady, vice-president operations of the Student Law Society, says the law team signed up for the Coldest Night of the Year walk has already raised more than $4,000 in pledges.

“We have been getting a lot of donations from students,” she says. “The law school is very collegial—a tight-knit community. It makes you want to get involved.”

The event provides participants the opportunity to experience a hint of the challenges facing Canada’s homeless by walking for a few hours during a cold night in the dead of winter.

“You don’t have to be homeless to need a little support,” Coady says.
