Canada Summer Jobs 2023 Program Information

The federal government’s Canada Summer Jobs (CSJ) program is an initiative of the Youth Employment and Skills Strategy, which aims to provide flexible and holistic services to support all young Canadians develop the skills and gain paid work experience to successfully transition in the labour market. The Canada Summer Jobs program objectives align with the redesigned Youth Employment and Skills Strategy and are as follows:

  • provide quality work experiences for youth

  • respond to national and local priorities to improve access to the labour market for youth who face unique barriers

  • provide opportunities for youth to develop and improve their skills

In recognizing that this is a great way to create summer employment opportunities for our students, the University of Windsor will submit one coordinated Canada Summer Jobs application in 2023 that will include all of the individual job proposals received by the University of Windsor’s internal deadline. The application process will be coordinated by Career Development & Experiential Learning in partnership with the Department of Finance.

Please note: that CSJ agreements must be signed by a representative of the University with the authorization to enter into an agreement and provide the financial details that are required to claim the funds at the end of the program. That said, all CSJ jobs to be hired by the University of Windsor and paid by the University of Windsor must follow this process.

How to apply for funding for 2023 summer students to be hired at the University of Windsor:

  • Application deadline is Thursday, December 22, 2022.
  • Job proposals may be submitted to Career Development & Experiential Learning using the Online Job Proposal Form

    • If you plan on requesting funding for more than one position, you will need to fill out a new survey for each position.
    • You must have authority to hire and supervise students and have budget oversight to ensure that any students hired through the program can be paid. If you do not have hiring authority and budget oversight, be sure to obtain permission from your department head/director/dean.

    • Each supervisor can submit up to 3 unique job proposals with one opening each. If you request funding for more than one position, you will be asked to indicate the order of priority.  If we receive significantly fewer proposals than we typically get funded, we will reach out and ask those that did apply if they would like to increase the number of hires in any one role.

    • The funding provided may be for fewer jobs, weeks, and/or hours per week than requested in the application. Please ensure you are going to be able to go through with the hire regardless of how many positions/weeks/hours you get approved for. Failure to use all of the funds awarded may affect funding provided to UWindsor through this program in future years.

  • All employers submitting an application are required to attend an Application Review Session virtually on one of the following dates, you will be asked to chose one of the following sessions at the end of the Online Job Proposal Form:

    • January 4, 2023 from 3-4pm

    • January 5, 2023 from 1-2pm

    • January 6, 2023 from 10-11am

  • Funding decisions will be made by Employment and Social Development Canada and communicated in April.

  • Funding may be approved for up to $7.75/hour (50% of Ontario minimum wage) for 30-40 hours per week for 6-16 consecutive weeks between April 24th, 2023 and September 2nd, 2023.

  • All approved jobs will be posted publicly on Canada's Job Bank with Career Development & Experiential Learning's email address as the contact. Any applications received will be forwarded to you for your consideration.

Students hired into University of Windsor positions approved for CSJ funding must:

  • Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment;

  • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for duration of the employment, and;

  • Have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.

  • Submit weekly time sheets and be paid as a student casual wage employee (i.e. not paid in a lump sum as part of a research contract).

  • To be eligible to work full time (more than 24 hours per week) at the University of Windsor over the summer, the incumbent must: be a student on summer break (i.e. not enrolled in more than 1 course in the summer term); have been enrolled as a student in Winter 2023 and be returning to studies in the Fall of 2023. Typically, graduate students will not qualify for this type of employment since the number of hours they can work is limited and they do not have a scheduled break and will therefore be registered in more than one course over the summer.

  • Any participant who is a member of the Immediate Family of an officer or director of the Employer is not eligible. If Canada is satisfied and agrees in writing before the commencement of the Job that the hiring of the Participant was not the result of favouritism by reason of membership in the Immediate Family of the Employer, officer or director, as the case may be, the costs may be eligible for reimbursement.

Assessment criteria used by Employment and Social Development Canada to evaluate applications:
