Study Abroad

Below are the available options for study abroad courses in the coming semester. Study abroad courses are an amazing opportunity to study for credit, while also gaining hands on knowledge of another country and culture.

Teeing off for Business Success: Scotland Study Abroad (MKTG 4910)

The course provides an overview of the culture of Scotland, the historical roots of the game of golf, and how to conduct business and build business relationships on the golf course. Attention will be paid to the differences in business culture and communication between an Anglo-Canadian context and an Anglo-European context, as well as Scotland’s contribution to golf in the business world. Attention will also be paid to golf as an inclusive sport in Scotland versus an exclusive sport in most other parts of the world. Students will have the opportunity to practice their communication, selling, and networking skills while honing their personal brand. Students do not need to be skilled golfers to participate, however, this course is not intended to teach students how to play golf. Students are expected to be familiar with and abide by golf etiquette and rules (e.g., dress code, pace of play, professionalism, etc.) Please note, this is a physically demanding class! We will often walk 20+ km in a day while carrying a golf bag. We will be using public transit to access most golf courses.

Special Topic in Strategic Management and Entrepreneurship: Study Abroad to Brazil (STEN 4910)

The mandate of the Winter 2025 Study Abroad class is to develop knowledge of the economy and culture of Brazil, an important emerging country, and to recognize areas of future Canada-Brazil collaboration. The 3 meetings scheduled prior to the term will be used for team development and trip preparation. Additionally, the project manager may schedule other meetings for team development. The students will learn about Brazil from guest speakers, and by conducting primary and secondary research. Students will prepare for a one week trip to Brazil, scheduled in March 2025.

Class time is a round-table discussion format used for collaboration of ideas and strategy with the rest of the class. Students will be evaluated on participation along with formal reports and presentations.

The class trip will incorporate an understanding of indigeneity, afro-culture, the Portuguese culture and other immigrant cultures in Sao Paulo. Indigenous art and culture is prominent in MASP and the Carnival themes and costumes, and afro-culture is found in the the flavours of Brazilian food and sounds of samba music. Students will learn about the influence of Indigenous and Black historical figures on the City of Sao Paulo and discuss Brazil’s relationship and recent efforts to protect Indigenous peoples. Their research papers on Brazilian sector update will also examine Indigenous and Afro-cultural influences.
