The recruitment and hiring of students is the responsibility of the Department Head and/or the faculty/principal researcher in the case of students hired under a faculty member’s grant. The types of student appointments available to students and corresponding forms processed by Human Resources are noted below:
There are four different types of appointments for research-based work at the University of Windsor for students:

Research Assistant – Scholarship (paid as lump sum) Human Resources does not accept RA Scholarship forms as this is paid through Accounts Payable. Please email acctpay@uwindsor.ca to inquire about this method of payment.

MITACS Internship (paid in a lump sum) Human Resources does not accept MITACS forms as this is paid through Accounts Payable. Please email acctpay@uwindsor.ca to inquire about this method of payment.

Research Assistant – Student Casual (timesheet driven)
To pay a student via an RA Salary or Student Casual Research Assistant appointment, please submit a Student Job Requisition through UWinsite People.

UWindsor’s Work Study Program has been rebranded as Ignite and will be facilitated as an experiential learning opportunity. The changes made to the program aim to provide participants with expanded opportunities to build skills relevant to their career development.

To hire an ignite student, please complete a Student Job Requisition through UWinsite People, match your successful ignite student to the requisition, and create a job offer for the student. Once submitted, it will route to ignite for approval before coming to HR for final approval and processing.
If you would like to hire a Casual Student, Student Proctor or Co-Op Student, you will need to complete a Student Job Requisition in UWinsite People.
The employment of Graduate Teaching Assistants and Undergraduate Teaching Assistants is facilitated by the Faculty of Graduate Studies.
To hire a GA or TA, please complete a Student Job Requisition through UWinsite People.

If you are looking to submit a supersedes contract or cancellation contract, please submit the appropriate contract through the GATA SharePoint as this is not yet accepted in UWP.
The Outstanding Scholars program offers paid research opportunities to undergraduate students in every major on campus. The Outstanding Scholars program provides faculty with an opportunity to secure meaningful research assistance without affecting their departmental budget.

It will route to Tim Brunet for approval before coming to Human Resources for approval and processing
Please note:
- Student employment is intended to be temporary and/or casual. It is not intended to replace work being carried out by permanent full-time/part-time employees.
- In accordance with the Government of Canada International Student Program regulations, international students are permitted to work on campus as long as they are enrolled full-time at the University in addition to holding the applicable items such as active study permit, active SIN and Canadian bank account as noted in the previous sections.
- Students are permitted to have multiple appointments on campus as long as the aggregate hours worked each week do not exceed twenty-four (24) hours. For graduate/undergraduate students including members of CUPE 4580, the aggregate allowable number of hours of paid university-related employment is twenty-four (24) hours per week as outlined on the Graduate Studies website.
