IT Services embraces BlackBerry 10

The University’s Information Technology Services now offers limited support for BlackBerry 10 smartphones that were launched in Canada on February 5 and are available to the University community though partners Telus and Kelcom under the Centre for Smart Community Innovation preferred carrier rate plans agreement.

IT Services will support the users of these new devices through its existing IBM Lotus Notes Traveler server, which currently provides mobile services to over 400 users with devices running Android or Apple’s iOS.

Existing version of Traveler is compatible with the BlackBerry 10 platform but initial testing uncovered a few minor issues that users need to consider before switching to this new platform. IT Services awaits the release of the new version of the Traveler software, scheduled for March, which will include full support for BlackBerry 10.

The University’s current BlackBerry Enterprise Server is not compatible with the new BlackBerry 10 devices, but will continue to support users with older devices until they are eligible for the hardware upgrade under their existing contract with their service provider.

More information about the BlackBerry 10 is available on the IT Services website or from the ITS HelpDesk at 519-253-3000, ext. 4440.
