What is your message to someone who is thinking about suicide?

Remember that you are not alone, even in the darkest moments. Your feelings and experiences are all valid, and you are stronger than you may realize. There are people who care about you and who want to support you. In order to find the support you need, it’s important to talk about your experiences and not bear this weight alone. There are many people on campus and in the community who want to support you in finding the hope and healing you deserve.

What would you tell someone who is feeling unsure about seeking support?

Seeking help is a sign of strength. There are many ways to cope with difficulties and many resources that can help you find strategies that work best for you. Healing can happen or come in unexpected ways but begins with you taking the first step for recovery. Reach out to others, whether that be a friend, family member, acquaintance or mental health professional for support and guidance. Having a conversation with others can provide comfort and new valuable insights. There is always potential when it you seek it.

Why does suicide prevention matter to you?

Suicide prevention matters to me because I believe that it’s extremely important to prioritize mental health, normalize seeking help, and show that there is support and hope in reaching out to others. It is important that people who are experiencing thoughts of suicide know that healing and recovery are possible. Each life has worth and you deserve the chance to find that healing with time, support, and healthy coping strategies.

How do you cope when things get tough?

My favorite coping strategy is spending time in nature while taking a walk. I find that being surrounded by nature provides me with a sense of peace and a place to let go of any stress and worries. Being outdoors allows me to focus on the present and the beauty of nature around me with a deep sense of connection and helps me avoid dwelling on the past or worrying about the future.

What gives you hope?

Focusing on my goals and setting short-term goals along the way helps me move forward with a sense of purpose and direction. The future can seem intimidating and unclear, but having clear goals or small things that we hope to achieve can provide some light, hope and comfort and help us move past difficulties. Seeing achievements, big or small still reinforces the idea that you are moving forward and that there is hope for a brighter future.
