What is your message to someone who is thinking about suicide?
I know things might be feeling hopeless right now, but I want you to know that you are NEVER alone. Do not feel ashamed for feeling the way you are feeling. I may not know you personally, but I believe you are worth fighting for and I want you to know that myself and many others on campus are here for you. You don’t have to struggle alone. Even if right now you think things cannot get better, I believe in you and I will always believe that you matter.
What would you tell someone who is feeling unsure about seeking support?
It is normal to feel unsure and scared to reach out for support. Whenever you are ready, I want you to know that there are safe spaces for you to seek help on campus and in the community. You can find more information about free and confidential resources by clicking here. Even though it can be hard, taking that first step to find support could change your life. We are all here to do whatever we can to help you.
Why did you want to become a Care Champion?
Suicide prevention matters to me because I think there is so much that can be done to help people. There are many resources and programs on campus and it is my goal to spread awareness about these options. If I can play a small part in helping our students feel like it matters that they are here, then there is nothing more important than that. As long as you are alive there is always hope. We are all part of the #LancerFamily and I hope every Lancer knows that they are valued and loved.
How do you cope when things get tough?
My favourite healthy coping strategy is exercise. Whatever I may be going through in life, exercise is the time I can completely clear my mind and let out all my stress. The many physical, mental, and social benefits that come with exercise helps me feel strong. I’m lucky and blessed to work in a department where so many amazing exercise options are available. What gives you hope?
Sometimes it can be hard to feel positive and look ahead to the future when things are tough. What helps me during these times is to remember that tomorrow the sun will rise which is an opportunity for me to feel better. I try to focus on one day at a time rather than getting caught up with the stressors of the future. I turn to my family and friends during the difficult times to remind me that I am loved and I always have people here for me. If you’re not close with your family or don’t have supportive people in your life right now, consider reaching out to the resources that we have on campus to find that sense of connection. There are people here who will truly care about you and who want to be there for you.
