Special Honours Conferred by External Agencies

The following prestigious awards and honours were conferred by external agencies to University of Windsor researchers in 2019 and 2020:

Companion of the Order of Canada

Iain Baxter& in a Swimming PoolIn 2019, Dr. Iain Baxter&, UWindsor Professor Emeritus of the School of Creative Arts, was promoted to Companion of the Order of Canada, the Order’s highest rank. Dr. Baxter& is recognized as one of Canada’s first conceptual artists and among the most accomplished living artists in the country. His promotion to Companion of the Order of Canada was conferred in recognition of his prolific career and lasting contributions that continue to define Canadian contemporary art.

The Order of Canada recognizes individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to the nation, enriched the lives of others, and made Canada a better place through outstanding contributions to their field. Membership of the Order of Canada is considered one of Canada’s highest honours.

In 2019, Dr. Julie Macfarlane, Professor Emeritus of the Faculty of Law, was inducted as a Member of the Order of Canada. Dr. Macfarlane is committed to making access to justice affordable for all. Her activism has resulted in a paradigm shift for the courts. Notably, as founder of the National Self-Represented Litigant Project, she has inspired debate on self-representation and provided invaluable services, resources and education tools to individuals confronting the judicial system. A professor of law and a distinguished university professor at the University of Windsor for more than 25 years, she is also esteemed for her writing on sexual violence and her advocacy for survivors, as well as for her study of Islamic divorce.

The Order of Canada recognizes individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to the nation, enriched the lives of others, and made Canada a better place through outstanding contributions to their field. Membership of the Order of Canada is considered one of Canada’s highest honours.

Hoda ElMaraghy Headshot with Order of Canada Medal

In 2020, Dr. Hoda ElMaraghy of the Department of Mechanical, Automotive and Materials Engineering was inducted as a Member of the Order of Canada in recognition of the impact of her contributions to mechanical engineering and her work in advancing manufacturing systems in Canada and abroad.

The Order of Canada recognizes individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to the nation, enriched the lives of others, and made Canada a better place through outstanding contributions to their field. Membership of the Order of Canada is considered one of Canada’s highest honours.

Dr. ElMaraghy was one of only two women engineers appointed on November, 27, 2020. Since its inception on April 17, 1967 by her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, 7,326 people have received the Order of Canada. The first woman engineer was appointed in 2002, and the total number of women engineers as of 2021 is 12 (0.16%).

Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering

Jonathan Wu HeadshotIn 2019, Jonathan Wu of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering was inducted as a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering, which brings together the nation’s most distinguished and experienced engineers to provide strategic advice on matters of critical importance to Canada. Dr. Wu is recognized as a world-leading expert in the field of computer vision and machine learning who has developed systems for a wide variety of real-world applications.

Canadian Society for Civil Engineering Camille A. Dagenais Award

Ram Balachandar HeadshotIn 2019, Dr. Ram Balachandar of the Departments of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Mechanical, Automotive, and Materials Engineering received the Camille A. Dagenais lifetime achievement award from the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering in recognition of his outstanding career contributions to the development and practice of hydrotechnical engineering in Canada. Dr. Balachandar’s research focussing on channel flows, fluid-structure interaction, and scour has resulted in significantly improved and sustainable design equations.

Government of Ontario David Walter Mundell Medal

David Tanovich HeadshotIn 2020, the Government of Ontario awarded Professor David Tanovich of the Faculty of Law the David Walter Mundell Medal for excellence in legal writing. Professor Tanovich is a recognized expert in the fields of criminal law, legal ethics, and systemic bias in the criminal justice system.

The Mundell Medal, which honours those who have made distinguished contributions to law and letters, is awarded annually by the Attorney General on the recommendation of the Chief Justice of Ontario to a legal writer whose literary craftsmanship and clarity of expression work together to make legal ideas come alive.

The Chief Justice of Ontario said of Professor Tanovich that his “critical race scholarship challenges us to examine systemic bias and urges us to work towards more equitable solutions”.

Professional Engineers of Ontario Order of Honour Member

In 2020, Dr. Waguih ElMaraghy of the Department of Mechanical, Automotive, and Materials Engineering received the Professional Engineers Ontario Oder of Honour at the Member level. The Order of Honour recognizes those PEO volunteers, including both professional engineers and others, who have made valuable contributions to the engineering profession.

Dr. ElMaraghy is a long-standing PEO volunteer, with service on the Academic Requirements Committee (ARC) since 1989. As the current ARC vice chair and chair of the Distance Education subcommittee, he has been developing guidelines and criteria for evaluating the credentials that applicants acquire through distance education courses/programs. In addition, Dr. ElMaraghy has volunteered with the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board (CEAB) and the Canadian Engineering Qualification Board (CEQB), and participated in many engineering programs accreditation committees, visits and meetings. He is currently a member of the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board.

Admission to the Order is the association’s highest form of recognition. Induction recognizes Dr. ElMaraghy’s substantial and long-lasting contributions to the engineering profession in Canada and beyond.

Canada Clean50 Award

Rupp CarriveauIn 2020, Dr. Rupp Carriveau of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering was the recipient of the Canada Clean50 award in recognition of his status as a Canadian leader in sustainability and his contributions to the advancement of the nation’s energy economy. The Clean50 awards are conferred annual to thought leaders, advocates, and sustainability leaders in industry, academia, and government. In particular, Dr. Carriveau was recognized for the Climate Led Energy Evolution Network 2040 (CLEEN2040) that he established to increase awareness of operational, financial, and environmental opportunities for optimization of Canada’s energy economy.

Western North Carolina Historical Association Thomas Wolfe Memorial Literary Award

In 2020, English and Creative writing Professor, Dr. Sandra Muse Isaacs, received the Thomas Wolfe Memorial Literary Award from the Western North Carolina Historical Association for her book, Eastern Cherokee Stories: A Living Oral Tradition and its Cultural Continuance. The award-winning book explores oral tradition, explaining how contemporary storytelling in this tradition is instrumental in the continuity of Cherokee identity and culture. The award is conferred annually for a publication that focuses special attention on Western North Carolina.

Society for Sex Therapy and Research Consumer Book Award

Dana Menard with Magnificent Sex BookIn 2020, Dr. Dana Ménard of the Department of Psychology received the Consumer Book Award from the Society for Sex Therapy and Research for Magnificent Sex: Lessons from Extraordinary Lovers. The Consumer Book Award recognizes the best book of the year for lay readers that contributes to the understanding of human sexuality and/or sexual problems. Magnificent Sex, which is based on the largest, in-depth interview study ever conducted with people who self-identify as having extraordinary sex, offers the reader accessible and attainable expert advice on improving sex and intimacy. In addition to its exploration of the myths and realities of exceptional sex, Magnificent Sex looks at a variety of factors, including empathetic communication and individual and relational qualities. Magnificent Sex has realized tremendous success and is now being translated into Spanish for the Latin American market.

Canadian Cinema Editors Best Editing in Feature Documentary Award

Sharkwater Extinction Film PosterIn 2019, Professor Nick Hector of the School of Creative Arts / Communication, Media, and Film was the recipient of the Canadian Cinema Editors Best Editing in a Feature Documentary Award for his work on Sharkwater Extinction, a film that he produced and edited that exposes the illegal fishing industry and the threat it poses to sharks internationally.

The Canadian Cinema Editors is among the most prestigious film industry bodies in Canada.

Prey Film PosterIn 2020, Professor Nick Hector of the School of Creative Arts / Communication, Media, and Film was the recipient of the Canadian Cinema Editors Best Editing in a Feature Documentary Award for his editing of the film, Prey. The highly acclaimed documentary chronicles the efforts of a sexual abuse survivor to seek justice in his court battle with the Catholic Church.

The Canadian Cinema Editors is among the most prestigious film industry bodies in Canada.

Forest City Film Festival Best Feature Documentary and Old Oak Audience Choice Awards

Prey Film PosterThe documentary, Prey, co-produced and edited by Professor Nick Hector of the School of Creative Arts / Communication, Media, and Film won both the Best Feature Documentary Award and the Old Oak Audience Choice Award at the 2019 Forest City Film Festival. Prey was featured on opening night of the festival where it screened to a sold-out crowd.

Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Film Festival DGC Special Jury Prize – Canadian Feature Documentary and Audience Award – Best Canadian Feature

Prey Film PosterIn 2019, the film, Prey, co-produced and edited by Professor Nick Hector of the School of Creative Arts / Communication, Media, and Film, won both the DGC Special Jury Prize for a Canadian Feature Documentary and the Audience Award for Best Canadian Feature at the Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Film Festival.

Hot Docs, which takes place in Toronto, Ontario annually, is the largest documentary festival in North America. Each year, the festival screens over 200 documentaries from around the world.

Windsor International Film Festival - Audience Award

Prey Film PosterIn 2019, the documentary, Prey, won the LiUNA People’s Choice Award at the Windsor International Film Festival. Co-produced and edited by Nick Hector, School of Creative Arts / Communication, Media, and Film, Prey was among 165 feature, documentary, and short films screened at the 2019 Windsor International Film Festival, Canada’s largest volunteer run festival.

Ontario Medical Association Honorary Membership

Siyaram Pandey HeadshotOMA AwardIn 2020, Dr. Siyaram Pandey of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry was the recipient of an Ontario Medical Association Honorary Membership in recognition of his outstanding service to the association, the medical profession, medical science, and common good at the provincial level, and more specifically, his pivotal research on apoptosis, which is central to various aspects of human health, including neurodegenerative diseases and cancer.

Established in 1921, the Ontario Medical Association Awards recognize outstanding physicians, residents, medical students, and community leaders for their remarkable achievements and contributions to the medical profession and healthcare in Ontario.

Automotive Parts Manufactures Association Institute for Automotive Cybersecurity Outstanding Individual Cyber Achievement Award

In 2020, Dr. Mitra Mirhassani of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering was the recipient of the Outstanding Individual Cyber Achievement Award from the Automotive Parts Manufacturers Association Institute for Automotive Cybersecurity. Dr. Mirhassani received the award in recognition of her contributions and impact on research and teaching in autonomous vehicles, hardware, and cybersecurity.

The mission of the Automotive Parts Manufacturers Association Institute for Automotive Cybersecurity is to enhance cyber awareness in the Canadian mobility sector. The Outstanding Individual Cyber Achievement Award recognizes an individual working in Canada with outstanding achievements in education, technology, governance, and assessments.

Automotive Parts Manufactures Association Institute for Automotive Cybersecurity Cyber Woman of the Year Award

In 2020, Dr. Ikjot Sani of the School of Computer Science received the Cyber Woman of the Year Award from the Automotive Parts Manufacturers Association Institute for Automotive Cybersecurity in recognition of her cutting-edge work in autonomous vehicles-to-everything (V2X) communication and for founding the first student chapter of Women in Cybersecurity.

The mission of the Automotive Parts Manufacturers Association Institute for Automotive Cybersecurity is to enhance cyber awareness in the Canadian mobility sector. The Cyber Woman of the Year Award recognizes a woman working in Canada who has made outstanding achievements in cybersecurity within the automotive sector.

IT World Canada’s Top 20 Women in Cyber Security Award

In 2020, Dr. Mitra Mirhassani of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering was recognized as one of the Canada’s Top 20 Women in Cyber Security by IT World Canada. Dr. Mirhassani was selected from among 170 nominations of women working in cyber security in a variety of roles in a broad range of organizations. The award recognizes Dr. Mirhassani for her highly innovative cyber security research program, which investigates issues arising from the use of battery charging infrastructure with electric vehicle fleets and improvement of autonomous and connected vehicle security, and her contributions and dedication to helping others better understand the function and connectivity of devices.

Canadian Society for Chronobiology Junior Investigator Award

In 2019, Dr. Phillip Karpowicz of the Department of Biomedical Sciences received the Junior Investigator Award from the Canadian Society for Chronobiology for his seminal contributions to the study of circadian rhythms and chronobiology nationally. The award is presented annually at the biennial meeting of the Canadian Society for Chronobiology, which attracts researchers from around the globe.

Thieme Chemistry Journal Award

Dr. Simon Rondeau-Gagné of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry received the 2019 Thieme Chemistry Journal Award in recognition of his early career work developing electronic materials with novel properties, including stretchability, the ability to self-healing, mechanical compliance, and infrared absorption for bioimaging.

The prestigious Thieme Chemistry Journal Award recognizes promising early career researchers from around the world in organic chemistry and the related fields of inorganic, physical, material, and biological chemistry.

In 2019, Dr. John Trant of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry received the Thieme Chemistry Journal Award in recognition of his early career research using synthetic chemistry to develop new treatments for diseases, including autoimmune conditions and cancer.

The prestigious Thieme Chemistry Journal Award recognizes promising early career researchers from around the world in organic chemistry and the related fields of inorganic, physical, material, and biological chemistry.

Stephen Leacock Memorial Medal for Humour

In 2020, Librarian Dr. Heidi LM Jacobs was the recipient of the Stephen Leacock Memorial Medal for Humour for her novel, Molly of the Mall: Literary Lass and Purveyor of Fine Footwear (NeWest Press). The book tells the story of aspiring novelist, Molly MacGregor, who navigates romance in 1990s Edmonton, Alberta. It has been said to reflect a uniquely Canadian brand of humour that is a central facet of Canadian life and culture.

The Stephen Leacock Memorial Medal for Humour has been awarded annually since 1947 for the best Canadian book of literary humour published the previous year.

Law Society of Ontario Medal

Jeff Berryman HeadshotIn 2020, Faculty of Law Professor Jeffrey Berryman was awarded the Law Society of Ontario Medal in recognition of his lifetime achievements and contributions to the legal profession and the study of contracts, remedies, and restitutions. The award honours outstanding professional service in the areas of practice and academics and in accordance with the highest ideals of the legal profession.

 

Humane Canada Women for a Human Canada Award

In 2019, Dr. Charu Chandrasekera, the Executive Director of the Canadian Centre for Alternatives to Animal Methods, was the recipient of Human Canada's Women for a Humane Canada Award, which recognizes the significance and impact of her efforts to develop and promote scientific methods that do not use animals as test subjects.

Humane Canada is the federation of SPCAs and humane societies that work with and care for animals to end animal cruelty, improve animal protection, and promote the humane treatment of all animals. Humane Canada's national Animal Welfare Leadership & Innovation Awards recognize individuals who have demonstrated leadership in promoting animal welfare in Canada.

British Institute of Non-Destructive Testing Roy Sharpe Prize

Roman Maev HeadshotIn 2019, Dr. Roman Maev of the Institute for Diagnostic Imaging Research was awarded the Roy Sharpe Prize by the British Institute of Non-Destructive Testing in recognition of his outstanding contributions to non-destructive testing.

The Roy Sharpe Prize is awarded by the Technical Committee of the British Institute of Non-Destructive Testing in recognition of a significant contribution through research and development in non-destructive testing to the benefit of industry and society and is sponsored each year by a different corporate member.

Province of Ontario John Charles Polanyi Prize

Marcus Drover HeadshotIn 2020, Dr. Marcus Drover was awarded the John Charles Polanyi Prize in Chemistry by the province of Ontario in recognition of his exceptional contributions as an early researcher. Dr. Drover’s research uses synthetic chemistry to address issues in clean and sustainable energy.

The John Charles Polanyi Prize is awarded by the province to five early career researchers who represent the province’s next generation of world-class researcher who will build Ontario’s proud legacy of advancement in science and technology. The Polanyi Prizes are the highest awards researchers can receive from the province of Ontario.

International Association for Great Lakes Research Lifetime Achievement Award

Jan Ciborowski HeadshotIn 2020, Integrative Biology Professor Emeritus, Dr. Jan Ciborowski, received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Association for Great Lakes Research in recognition of his more than 35-year commitment to developing science that can be applied to restoring and protecting the Great Lakes.

Dr. Ciborowski is a leading expert in monitoring and organism stressor-response relationships who has expertise in nutrient, toxicity assays, and invertebrate aquatic ecosystem research.

The International Association for Great Lakes Research Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes important and continued contributions to the field of Great Lakes research over a period of 20 years or more.

Essex Region Conservation Authority Conservation Honours Education Award

In 2020, the Freshwater Restoration Ecology Centre (FREC) was awarded the Essex Region Conservation Autority (ERCA) Conservation Honours Education Award for ground-breaking research while engaging the public in Great Lakes biodiversity education.

FREC aims to better understand key stressors and threats to our freshwater biodiversity like climate change, habitat alteration, and urbanization, and engages an integrated team of high school student volunteers, undergraduate and graduate students, youth and elders from Walpole Island First Nation, and the public in this educational work.

The ERCA Conservation Honours Education Award is conferred annually to an individual, organization, or municipality in recognition of excellence in ongoing conservation education programs or individual projects in schools, organizations, youth groups, etc.
