The University of Windsor’s Department of Sociology, Anthropology and Criminology, in collaboration with University of Trento’s Department of Sociology and Social Research, sponsored a weeklong Migration, Mobility and Borders Summer Institute at the University of Trento. The Summer Institute was a knowledge-sharing, comparative event held during the week of August 25- September 1st, 2018 at the Dipartimento di Sociologia e Ricerca Sociale of the Università degli Studi di Trento, Italy.

The Institute brought together not only 7 graduate students from Canada and 8 from Europe, but also internationally-recognized scholars Paolo Boccagni, Peter Kivisto, Martina Cvajner, Tanya Basok, Yasemin Soysal, Verena Wisthaler, Alice Engl, Giuseppe Sciortino, Nicholas Harney  as well as local NGO leaders, such as Rossana Apaza-Clavijo to discuss migration, borders and mobility in a comparative context.

A foundational objective of this Institute was to encourage graduate students to develop a comparative perspective in research about migration, borders and mobility to overcome methodological nationalism. Other specific objectives of the summer institute were to: (1) provide graduate students an intensive international learning experience; (2) provide students and scholars alike an opportunity to establish international research networks in the field of migration and border communities.

Teaching methods were based on lectures, as well as on interactive formats such as workshops and roundtables. Participants had a chance to present their current research projects, and receive feedback and recommendations from the guest professors. There were nine extended lectures by established international scholars. Presentation of case studies and on-going research occupied a large share of the allotted time.

The Summer Institute was part of the ongoing collaboration between the Department of Sociology, Anthropology and Criminology at the University of Windsor and the Department of Sociology at the University of Trento. The research was supported by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada through a Connections Grant. It also enjoyed the generous support of the University of Windsor’s VP of Research and Innovation, the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences and the Departments of SAC and History at Windsor and, in Trento, the Dipartimento di Sociologia e Ricerca Sociale.
