Between August 24th and September 1st, fifteen graduate students from across Europe and Canada, representing 14 different universities, gathered in Trento, Italy for the Summer Institute in Migration, Mobilities and Borders held in the Dipartimento di Sociologia e Ricerca Sociale supported by a SSHRC Connections award and co-sponsored by the University of Windsor and the Università degli Studi di Trento. The Institute created an opportunity for graduate students and established scholars to explore research about migration, borders and mobility in a comparative perspective. A core theme of the Institute was to challenge our naturalized assumptions about our objects of study, our methods and our perceptions of key categories. A second objective was to foster a habit of collaborative work among peers. This eight day intensive Institute offered significant formal and informal time for the study of one of the most complex phenomena and public policy issues of the day. Joint collaborative articles focussed on themes raised during the Institute will be published in 2019.
