New support advisors will help provide counsel to students experiencing trauma as a result of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, says Provost and Vice-President Academic, Robert Aguirre.

“We have recognized that the current humanitarian crisis is challenging for many of us on campus, particularly for those members of groups who have been most directly impacted,” Dr. Aguirre says. “We are pleased to announce that two members of our faculty have stepped forward in this critical time to act as supports for students.”

Riham Al-Saadi, assistant professor in the School of Social Work, will serve as the Palestinian Student Support Advisor. She completed all her studies at the University of Windsor: a bachelor of science in behaviour, cognition, and neuroscience; and master’s and PhD degrees in social work. A Palestinian-Canadian whose family sought refuge in Lebanon in 1948, Dr. Al-Saadi focused her doctoral dissertation on immigrant and refugees’ acculturation process and her positionality as a Palestinian with immigrant and refuge milestones.

Ira Lawrence Cohen serves as the Jewish Student Support Advisor. He is a sessional lecturer in the Odette School of Business, teaching courses in the Master of Management program, including international business and strategy management. Dr. Cohen holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in communication arts, a postgraduate diploma in international business management, an MBA, and a PhD with a dissertation focus on solving the business challenges and developing the competencies of entrepreneurs through the application of action learning. “I encourage students to reach out to either of these advisors for support in dealing with the impact of global conflict,” says Aguirre.

Deb was an exceptional person and teacher. She taught with vibrancy, advocacy, and left a positive, lasting impact on her former students. Her students remember her fondly. She was a faculty member in the School of Social Work and lead the Disability Studies program for many years. Her compassion and advocacy for  the disabled was awe inspiring. Dr. HJ, we will forever remember your smile and kindness. Your legacy lives on!

These are messages from our School of Social Work community below. If you are interested in leaving a message, kindly email socwork@uwindsor.ca:

"Debbie (Dr. H-J) was one of the kindest souls, so motivating, inspiring, and continued to be a beautiful connection and support to me. I will never forget the impact she has on my academic journey".  Dr. Riham Al-Saadi

"I remember your big smile! You were so full of life even in difficult times. You were spirited and lively. Sometimes, you would change your hair color to blue or pink; I found it so amusing. You will be dearly missed Debra. You are somewhere we just don’t see you.  Rest in Peace."  Dr. Jayashree Mohanty

"Dr. H.J. was the faculty co-advisor for the Student Accessibility Committee that I served on when I was an MSW student.  Her passion for accessibility in school, society, and policy was a major inspiration in my career path.  Without her encouragement, I wouldn’t have had the courage to pursue policy as my area of practice and I wouldn’t be where I am today.  Her passion and warmth have stayed with me all these years and I will always remember her." Dr. Kristina Nikolova

Stefan completed his MSW in 2023 and has been successfully working in the social work field. Unfortunately, Stefan is currently experiencing additional serious medical challenges. His family has reached out for support. Please see their message below in the hope that you will consider supporting this brave, resilient graduate.
