Am I eligible to apply to Graduate Studies?

  • M.Sc. Programs:
    Applicants should have a four year Bachelor's degree (preferably Honours) with a minimum of B- (70%) range overall, and in both the final two years of study and the major subject.
  • Ph.D. Programs:
    Applicants should have a Master's degree with a minimum B+ (77%) average in all courses taken for that degree, or a four-year Bacherlor’s degree, or the equivalent.   Admission to our doctoral program is almost always contingent upon the availability of supervision and funding in the applicant's field of research.

How do I apply to Graduate Studies?

What documents do I need to provide with my application?

  1. A complete online application form (upload all required documents)
  2. Two (2) official/notarized Undergraduate transcripts from all institutions attended.  Transcripts must be sent directly from the issuing institution to Office of the Registrar
  3. Two (2) confidential references (on official letterhead)
  4. A list of specific topics/courses studied in Mathematics and/or Statistics (do not include syllabi)
  5. Proof  of English Language Proficiency for foreign applicants whose undergraduate degree was not taken at an English-language university.  We accept the following tests as proof of proficiency in English:
    • TOEFL with a minimum score of 560 (paper-based);  220 (computer-base);  83 on the TOEFL iBT,
    •  IELTS minimum score of 6.

What is the application deadline?
The deadline for applications for September admission for the Graduate program in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics is February 1st of each year.  This applies to Canadian and international students. All completed applications received by the application deadline will be reviewed by the end of February, and applications accepted will be notified in March.   
All graduate students are admitted for the Fall (September) semester.  We do not admit students for other semesters into any program. (There is no Summer or Winter admissions).
International students should be aware that the visa process may take many months so they should apply as early at least six months earlier than the above date.

Will I receive financial support? How much financial support will I received?
 
At the time of admission all full-time applicants with high academic averages (above 80%, or equivalent) will be considered for scholarships upon our recommendation for admission.
No separate application is required.
Graduate student’s support can come from several sources including:

  • Graduate (Teaching) Assistantship;
  • Summer Research Assistantship from their supervisor;
  • Tuition (Entrance) award; and
  • for additional funding students are encourage to apply for Internal awards as well as External agencies such as NSERC, OGS.

When should I start my graduate studies?
Normally a student begins their graduate studies in the Department in September for both MSc and Doctoral programs.  Students wishing to defer the admission at a later date will need to confirm with the potential supervisor for approval.  If the deferral is for a longer periode, the student will be required to complete a new application and to resubmit the documents.
