Title: A Statistical View of Some Climate Change Controversies
Abstract:
This talk examines three recent controversies in climate from a statistical viewpoint. The questions considered are
1) Have global warming rates increased recently?
2) What changes are we seeing in the Earth’s hurricanes and tropical cyclone frequencies?
3) How is snow cover changing on our planet?
Statistical changepoint methods are used to analyze data associated with the first two questions. A Markov chain approach is developed to analyze weekly satellite pictures of the Earth to answer the third question. Some interesting findings, both good and bad for mankind, are made.
