Program Background

The Igniting Discovery Grants will provide seed funding to stimulate the development of early-stage, novel, and innovative health research and education projects in Windsor-Essex. These projects may include studies related to emerging topics in health, addressing gaps, catalyzing new ideas, generating and disseminating knowledge, and sparking collaborations. The intent is to:

  1. Provide new research teams/ research programs with support to pursue quality projects
  2. Encourage exploratory and discovery-oriented projects
  3. Boost collaborations among Windsor-Essex health community and beyond

Priority areas are announced at the beginning of each funding competition. 

All grants are subject to availability of funds. 

 

Summary

  • The Igniting Discovery Grants will provide funding for applications that have any health research focus across all health themes (biomedical research, clinical research, implementation science, educational health programs, health services research and social, cultural, environmental and population health research).
  • These grants are intended to be leveraged to generate interest and eagerness in the Windsor-Essex health research environment, result in practice changes and/or policy reform, create a wider and all-encompassing health research portfolio in Windsor-Essex, create and disseminate new knowledge and findings, support local patients, residents and communities, and obtain larger funding from other sources.
  1. Where other locations are proposed, there must be a strong justification.
  2. An individual cannot submit more than one (1) application as the Principal Applicant (PA) per grant competition. This individual may however participate as a Co-applicant or Collaborator on other applications.
  3. PAs currently holding one of these awards are eligible to participate as a Co-Applicant or Collaborator on any applications submitted by others.
  4. Pas currently holding one of these awards are also eligible to participate as the PA, provided that the proposed research project is different from the grant you currently you and you can confirm that project budgets will be exclusive of one another.
  5. A PA who has held one of these awards in the past is permitted to be a PA on a subsequent application if:
    1. The previous grant is completed with all funds spent and a final report submitted
    2. The subsequent application is for a research project that was not previously supported by grant funding
