On Wednesday, July 6, the Canadian & American Dual JD Program was visited by more than 30 members of the George W. Bush Institute. The Institute, based in Dallas, Texas, sent a working group from its North America Competitiveness Initiative to visit the Detroit/Windsor area and explore ways in which economic integration among the US, Canada and Mexico can strengthen the US economy and create economic opportunity across the North American continent.
Detroit Mercy Law Dean Phyllis L. Crocker welcomed the group and provided a bit of history and context about the program. She was followed by Attorney, Detroit Mercy Law Adjunct Faculty and Program Alum David Campbell, who shared his experiences utilizing his dual degree in his law firm and in his teaching. Rising 3L Jaclyn Habas spoke of her reasons for choosing the dual JD program over other options and the program concluded with a Q&A session facilitated by Program Director Brian Miller.
In expressing the group’s interest in learning more about the dual JD program, Laura Collins, Economic Growth Manager for the Institute, noted, “Our work on North America focuses on economic integration. While we still are developing policy proposals…, we like to look at places that have already figured out a way to advance integration. We think this dual JD program is a perfect fit. Students who complete (the) program (and successfully are admitted to the bar in each country) meet the unique needs of border communities by providing services for both countries. The fact that the program was developed organically is also attractive because it illustrates how entities in border communities help meet the needs of the community without worrying about the government taking the time to act.”
