Professor Laverne Jacobs is one of a group of administrative law professors who co-authored an op-ed last week in Le Devoir. They argue for more transparency in the selection and reappointment processes of administrative tribunal decision-makers. The group praised the Trudeau government’s February announcement proposing reforms to the appointment process for federal administrative tribunals (which include tribunals affecting a wide range of important issues such as pensions, entitlement to disability benefits and refugee claims). They welcome this initiative which the government has described as an “open, transparent and merit-based selection process for Governor in Council appointments” that would result in appointing “high-quality candidates who truly reflect Canada’s diversity”.
