Degree Programs
Windsor Law graduates have achieved great success in both traditional and non-traditional legal careers. That is because our core Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree and accelerated joint-degree programs produce experienced, compassionate legal professionals who are prepared to take on challenges in the courtroom, the boardroom and beyond.
Our J.D. program is unique for several reasons. First, the program demonstrates a deep commitment to access to justice. The result is a course calendar brimming with electives like International Human Rights Law, Aboriginal Law and Society, and Feminist Legal Theory. The same commitment fuels our three community clinics, including the first mediation clinic at a Canadian law school.
The J.D. program is also unique for its emphasis on foundational lawyering skills. Our first-year Legal Research and Writing course is a wonderful example.
"We have professors whose major academic focus, both research and teaching, is on legal research and writing," says Dean Bruce P. Elman.
Windsor Law devotes such prized resources to first-years, because we know that strong memo writing, research and analytical skills will serve them well throughout their legal education and subsequent careers.
Our Academic Success Programme, offers sessions on time management and improving study skills for first-years, as well as individual or group tutoring in fundamental law courses.
More and more students are choosing to apply for enhanced programs involving a second graduate degree along with their J.D. For students who want to enrich their legal education and expand their career options, Windsor offers dual-degree programs in Canada/U.S. law, business and social work.
The joint Canadian & American Dual J.D. Program is the first program in North America to award both an American and Canadian law degree in just three years. Offered through a partnership with the University of Detroit Mercy, the program is a rigorous integrated exploration of two interconnected, yet distinct legal cultures, preparing students to work in multiple markets.
The joint M.B.A./J.D. program is coordinated with the University of Windsor Odette School of Business and confers both a business and law degree in only four years. The dual degree is excellent preparation for corporate leadership positions.
The joint M.S.W./J.D. program is our newest venture, welcoming the first social work and law students in the fall of 2010.
"We see tremendous synergies between what social workers do and what many lawyers do," says Dean Elman of the overlapping realms of social and legal justice. "We think that this new program will bring us some more very interesting students."
