WINDSOR, Ontario, November 27, 2020 – Dr. Hoda ElMaraghy has received Canada's highest civilian honour, the Order of Canada. “This honour, one of the highest in the country, has been conferred upon you by Her Excellency the Right Honourable Julie Payette, Governor General of Canada. It is a testament to your outstanding achievement and service to the nation”. The official announcement, by news release from Rideau Hall in Ottawa, was made today (link below).
Professor ElMaraghy is a renowned scholar and research innovator, an inspiring educator, leader and role model, whose seminal contributions have been recognized nationally and internationally with numerous prestigious awards and accolades.
Professor ElMaraghy is a world leader in manufacturing systems. Her ground-breaking research has opened new and exciting fields of research in Co-Evolution and Co-Development of Products and Manufacturing Systems using the principles of Natural Evolution. Her vast contributions to modern manufacturing systems’ paradigms, flexibility and changeability have changed the way they are currently designed and operated. Her acclaimed publications and pioneering research make her a pre-eminent scholar of manufacturing systems research in Canada and internationally.
Professor ElMaraghy was elected to the Order of Ontario, the highest honour a civilian can receive in Ontario, in 2016. She is a registered professional engineer in the province of Ontario (P.Eng.), has an Honorary Doctorate from Chalmers University, and is a Fellow of: the Royal Society of Canada (RSC), the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences (IVA), the Canadian Academy for Engineering (CAE), the International Academy for Production Engineering (CIRP), the Canadian Society for Mechanical Engineering (CSME), and the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME).
Hoda ElMaraghy is a “Distinguished University Professor” and founding Director of the Intelligent Manufacturing Systems Centre (IMS) since 1994 at the University of Windsor, where she was also appointed the first woman Dean of Engineering in Canada. She obtained a Master and PhD from McMaster University and Bachelor of Engineering from Cairo University. Dr. ElMaraghy has been a pioneer, an inspiring role model and mentor for engineers in Canada and beyond throughout her illustrious career. This latest recognition makes her the first engineer and the first woman in Windsor to receive the Order of Canada since it was created in 1967.

Professor Waguih ElMaraghy is professor and Director of the Intelligent Manufacturing Systems Centre at the University of Windsor, Canada. Professor Waguih ElMaraghy is member of the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board (CEAB) and Chair of the distance education committee of Professional Engineering Ontario (PEO) which regulates nearly 90,000 Engineers in Canada.
Dr Waguih ElMaraghy has been on the Academic Requirements Committee (ARC) of PEO for many years and has received the prestigious 2020 PEO “Order of Honour”. The Order of Honour Awards Ceremony scheduled for May 13, 2021, in Ottawa in conjunction with PEO’s Annual General Meeting.
The PEO long citation states Dr. Eng. Engineering professor elected to Royal Society of Canada

Hailing her as a “world leader in manufacturing systems,” the Royal Society of Canada announced Tuesday its election of UWindsor engineering professor Hoda ElMaraghy as a fellow.
“Distinguished scholars and artists are elected to the Fellowship of the Royal Society of Canada on the basis of their exceptional contributions to Canadian intellectual life,” said the society’s president, Chad Gaffield. “Your election is a telling recognition of your remarkable accomplishments and an invitation to further the leadership you have already shown in advancing knowledge and scholarship in Canada.”
Dr. ElMaraghy, a Distinguished University Professor in the Department of Mechanical, Automotive, and Materials Engineering, is director of the Intelligent Manufacturing Systems Centre and held the Canada Research Chair in Manufacturing Systems for 14 years.
She said she is pleased by her election to the Applied Sciences and Engineering Division of the Academy of Science.
“I am delighted to join this distinguished group of scholars and look forward to contributing to the important work of the RSC Academy,” ElMaraghy said.
The society cited her pioneering research and publications in naming her the “pre-eminent scholar of manufacturing systems research” in Canada and internationally.
“Her inspiring research opened up new research fields in Co-Evolution and Co-Development of Products and Manufacturing Systems using principles of Natural Evolution,” the citation reads. “Her vast contributions to modern manufacturing systems paradigms, flexibility and changeability changed the way they are designed and operated.”
UWindsor vice-president, research and innovation, K.W. Michael Siu, expressed appreciation for this recognition accorded ElMaraghy: “Induction as a Fellow is among the most prestigious accolades conferred upon Canadian scholars and Dr. ElMaraghy is a trail-blazer and is certainly a most deserving recipient.”
ElMaraghy will be inducted in a ceremony November 16 in Halifax during the society’s Celebration of Excellence and Engagement.

Engineering professor wins royal accolade

UWindsor professor Hoda ElMaraghy has won election to the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences.
The Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences has elected UWindsor professor of industrial and manufacturing systems engineering Hoda ElMaraghy to international membership.
Founded in 1919, the organization is the world´s oldest academy of engineering sciences, and numbers about 1,000 Swedish and 300 foreign members.
Dr. ElMaraghy is one of only two non-Swedish engineers among 12 new fellows elected this year.
“This is a great international recognition of my scientific and engineering contributions and stature in the world,” she said.
ElMaraghy, a trailblazer for women in engineering, holds the rank of Distinguished University Professor. In 1994, she became the first woman to hold the position of dean of engineering at a Canadian university. She is a member of the Order of Ontario, the Canadian Academy of Engineering, the Canadian Society of Mechanical Engineers, and the International Academy for Production Engineering.
She also has ties to research in Sweden, serving since 2008 as a scientific advisor to Wingquist Laboratory VINN Excellence Center, at Gothenburg’s University of Chalmers, which awarded her an honorary doctorate in 2013.
Members of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences promote the engineering and economic sciences and the advancement of business and industry. The academy aims to influence societal development and policy making through knowledge transfer activities and projects, and recognizes achievements in natural sciences, engineering and economics by distributing awards, scholarships and medals.

Former dean of engineering joins ranks of Distinguished University Professors

Engineering prof Hoda ElMaraghy was formally recognized as a Distinguished University Professor during Convocation celebrations October 15.
Hoda ElMaraghy, an internationally renowned researcher and trailblazer for female engineers, has been appointed to the rank of Distinguished University Professor.
As a recent appointee to the Order of Ontario and Canadian Academy of Engineering, Dr. ElMaraghy has been hailed for her pioneering research in manufacturing systems engineering. Her research on flexible manufacturing has helped manufacturers around the world adapt and respond to market changes by allowing companies to produce different products with the same flexible manufacturing system.
“Dr. ElMaraghy has had a remarkable internationally recognized career with many positive impacts for industry and for students,” said UWindsor president Alan Wildeman. “It was a privilege to bestow this honour upon her.”
ElMaraghy was formally recognized at UWindsor’s 2016 Fall Convocation on October 15.
The Canada Research Chair in Manufacturing Systems and founder and director of the university’s Intelligent Manufacturing Systems Centre joins the ranks of 38 distinguished UWindsor professors, seven of whom are engineers. Senate’s Special Appointments Committee began bestowing the honour in 1986 to recognize distinguished achievements in teaching and wide national or international reputation for scholarship, creative or professional accomplishment.
“It is a great recognition and a distinct honor of which I am very proud,” said ElMaraghy, a native of Egypt who became the first Canadian woman to earn a doctorate in mechanical engineering. “It is particularly gratifying to be recognized by distinguished colleagues and eminent international scholars.”
In 1994, UWindsor appointed ElMaraghy dean of engineering, making her the first woman in Canada to receive the title. In addition to her Canadian Academy of Engineering fellowship, ElMaraghy is a fellow of the Canadian Society of Mechanical Engineers, the Society of Manufacturing Engineers, and the International Academy for Production Engineering, as well as a senior member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering Professor Dr. Hoda ElMaraghy, Senior Canada Research Chair in Manufacturing Systems, was invested into “Order of Ontario” – the highest official honor that Ontario can bestow on its citizens.
The investiture ceremony took place on Wednesday 20 January 2016 in the Ontario Legislature at Queen’s Park in Toronto where the Honorable Elizabeth Dowdeswell, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario and representative of the Queen, presented her with the official insignia. She is the only engineer among an impressive list of 25 accomplished Ontarians who received this great honor in the 30th anniversary of the Order of Ontario.
Her citation read: “Distinguished scholar and professor, Dr. ElMaraghy is changing the way the industrial world operates. Her work in mechanical engineering has helped influence public policy, positioning Canada at the forefront of emerging transformative technologies and global trends in manufacturing.
Director of the Intelligent Manufacturing Systems Center at the University of Windsor, her catalytic research on flexible manufacturing has revolutionized the way manufacturers around the world adapt and respond to market changes by enabling companies to be adaptive and agile and enhancing the economic sustainability of the modern factory.
The first woman Dean of Engineering in Canada and also the first Canadian woman to earn a PhD in mechanical engineering, Dr. ElMaraghy has been a trail-blazer, inspiration and mentor to aspiring young men and women engineers in this province and beyond”.

Waguih ElMaraghy one of seven engineers admitted to 2015 SME College of Fellows
Professor Waguih ElMaraghy was recently selected as a fellow of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers’, one of only seven individuals to receive this honour.
Professor of Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering and Director of the Intelligent Manufacturing Systems Centre, Waguih ElMaraghy, was recently selected as a fellow of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers’ (SME) College of Fellows. Dr. ElMaraghy was one of only seven individuals to receive this honour.
Dr. ElMaraghy was recognized by the manufacturing community and his peers in appreciation of his commitment to the advancement of professionalism, knowledge and learning in the international manufacturing community.
Dr. ElMaraghy says he is delighted to have been elected this year to be amongst this very select group.

Congratulations to Dr. Hoda ElMaraghy, Canada Research Chair in Manufacturing Systems and Director of the Intelligent Manufacturing Systems Centre (IMSC), who is being awarded the "Research Engineering Ambassador Award 2014" by Partners in Research (PIR) in recognition of her outstanding research and outreach activities over her career. Partners in Research, a registered Canadian charity since 1988, is an organization that recognizes exceptional Canadian research and the communication of that research to the community, educating about Health Research, Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics in the Public Domain. Dr. ElMaraghy will be receiving this national award at the Award Reception in Ottawa on May 23, 2014 where she will deliver an acceptance speech to discuss the nature of her research and commitment to outreach.
Gary Goodyear to speak at UWindsor gathering of global production engineers
The 47th annual Manufacturing Systems Conference, Managing Variety in Manufacturing, will take place from April 28 to 30 and will focus on product innovation from design to retirement to recycling—the entire product and manufacturing systems’ life cycle. The Honourable Gary Goodyear, Minister of State (Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario), will speak at the 8:30 a.m. opening session on April 28. The manufacturing conference will be followed immediately by CIRP’s sixth annual Conference on Industrial Product-Service Systems on May 1 and 2.
“It is a real honour to be selected to host these two conferences for the first time in Canada as it is international recognition of the excellence of the research carried out in our Intelligent Manufacturing Systems Centre,” says conference organizer Hoda ElMaraghy, Canada Research Chair in Manufacturing Systems. “Manufacturing is particularly important for the economic prosperity of this region; it directly contributes about 11 percent to Canada’s gross national products (GDP) and employs close to 1.8 million Canadians.”
The four-day event will gather more than 200 manufacturing and production experts from around the world and will feature 12 keynote presentations from top international professors and industry executives.
CIRP is the world leader in production engineering research and is at the forefront of research and innovation in manufacturing engineering, machines, industrial systems and production management. Engineering Professors invited to speak at the world-renowned CARV 2013 conference
Dr. Hoda ElMaraghy and Dr. Waguih ElMaraghy, both professors in the Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering department, and, Co-Directors of the Intelligent Manufacturing Systems Centre (IMSC), were invited to be keynote speakers at the prestigious 5th International Conference on Changeable, Agile, Reconfigurable and Virtual Production (CARV 2013) which was held in Munich, Germany, on October 6-9, 2013. Their keynote paper entitled "Variety Complexity & Value Creation" was presented on the first day of the conference and was extremely well received.

Engineering professor receives honorary degree from Chalmers University
Hoda ElMaraghy, a professor and Canada Research Chair in Manufacturing Systems, received an honorary doctorate of engineering from Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, Sweden, on June 1.
“It was a very festive convocation ceremony,” Dr. ElMaraghy said of the proceedings.
The honorary award at Chalmers is presented in recognition of a particularly eminent and substantial professional achievement linked to areas of competence at the university, as well as for the establishment of a contact network between the recipient and the university.
A member since 2005 of the international evaluation board for the Swedish Research Foundation, a federal granting body similar to NSERC, ElMaraghy evaluates research programs and major proposals from universities and researchers across Sweden. She has also been a member of the International Science Advisory Board of the Winquist Research Excellence Center at Chalmers University since 2007.
According to the centre’s web site, ElMaraghy was nominated for the award because of her “outstanding research and her strong international engagement in the area of production.” She was described as an “internationally respected researcher with an extensive international network” who is well-known in the Canadian Society of Mechanical Engineers, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and the International Academy for Production Engineering.
ElMaraghy’s own research program is focused on the design and evolution of manufacturing systems, which particular emphasis on developing flexible, reconfigurable systems that would allow manufacturers to quickly adapt their systems to meet increased consumer demand for more customized products.

Washing machine proves useful for award-winning engineering research

Both figured they needn't look any further than an ordinary household appliance like a washing machine to demonstrate how manufacturers can respond to growing consumer demand for increased product variety but still remain profitable.
