Established in 2008, the Institute for Diagnostic Imaging Research (IDIR) at the University of Windsor is a multi-disciplinary, collaborative research and innovation centre whose primary focus is on the development of innovative diagnostic imaging technologies and products. Since then, the Institute has been consistently recognized as a world leader in the development of technology that is saving time, money and lives.
But the journey to this kind of success didn’t begin in 2008…the University of Windsor and its physicists have been exploring and innovating for over twenty-five years in the areas of:
- Non-destructive testing
- Image processing
- Material characterization
- Solid state physics
- Manufacturing processes
- Medical biophysics
- Biometrics
- Nanotechnology
- Art Analysis
However, pioneering ventures in these areas weren’t enough so, recognizing the acute need for enhanced knowledge mobility, technology transfer and collaborative partnerships, the Ontario Ministry of Research and Innovation made an investment of $5 million… an investment that has made a non-descript office building near Windsor, Ontario’s downtown core a focal point for research and innovation in Ontario, across Canada and around the world.
Following an infusion of monies in 2011 and 2012 from both the Government of Ontario and the Federal Economic Development Agency (FedDev), the Institute has been able to continue its unique, multi-sectored approach involving the University of Windsor, private and public sector partners and all levels of government. Today, it continues to conduct innovative diagnostic imaging research that is frequently commercialized through technology transfer initiatives with the private sector and through the creation of spin-off companies.
