History in the Community

Opportunities in Public History at UWindsor

In the History program at the University of Windsor, we have new courses that allow you to apply your historical skills to real-life situations in the community, and online. You could use these skills in a variety of careers, including public history (museums, archives), community organizations, business, teaching, and journalism, among others.

In a single generation, the internet has changed the way people see, access and interact with history. Learn to evaluate historical content on the web, edit a Wikipedia entry, and create your own historical website.

Study the history and methods of public historians and the work of museums and archives. Develop your own online exhibit working with scanned historical documents from local archives.

Internship in Public History

Beginning in 2017, students can do a one-term, for-credit internship with a local museum, archive or community heritage organization. Get experience in areas such as creating public displays, research, organizing and recording historical materials, and public relations.

You may also supplement your public history skills with courses in media and documentary production in the Department of Communication, Media and Film, as well as courses in film, curation, and community cultural engagement at the School of Creative Arts, all at the University of Windsor.
