The University of Windsor/GLIER will receive $1.6 million dollars as part of a larger initiative to support Great Lakes environmental projects and research. One of the projects carried out at GLIER is being led by Dr. Christopher Weisener, along with a team of researchers including Dr. R. Michael McKay, Dr. Ken Drouillard, Dr. Ali Saber and Dr. Scott Mundle. They will study nutrient anomalies in the watersheds leading to the Great Lakes, and determine the source of the nutrient loads. This can in turn lead to innovative solutions to control the amount of nutrients flowing into the Great Lakes. High nutrient loads into the Great Lakes, especially Lake Erie are responsible for harmful algal blooms which occur with regular frequency in the lakes.
