GLIER researchers are working on the frozen Great Lakes this winter to further understand their winter ecology in the face of Climate Change

GLIER and School of Environment researchers Drs. Mike McKay and Ken Drouillard, along with aquatic technician Aaron Newhook are taking to the icy waterways of the Great Lakes to assess what's happening under the ice, or in the open water in terms of food webs and potential algal blooms.  Preliminary work has shown a surprising amount of algal growth in the icy waters.  Some of these algae can form harmful algal blooms.
