Dr. Mike McKay and his team are carrying out some monitoring of wastewater for the highly contagious measles virus which is on the rise in Ontario. Although province wide monitoring for measles is currently not being carried out, the tool could prove useful to identify cases and outbreaks earlier, and potentially slow down the spread due to earlier warning. The virus can be spread up to four days prior to major symptoms appearing, making the wastewater monitoring a useful tool to identify cases before symptoms appear.
