GLIER researchers working to restore Lake Sturgeon population

Often called a "living fossil", the prehistoric lake sturgeon found in the Great Lakes and rivers is suffering from population decline, mostly due to human-influenced factors.  Graduate student Olivia Galloway, under the guidance of GLIER researcher Dr. Trevor Pitcher, is working to improve the survivability of reared sturgeon in part by improving the habitat in the rearing tanks.  Sturgeon, which can grow to 2 m, and up to 200 pounds are reared in tanks for release into the Great Lakes at the University of Windsor's Freshwater Restoration Ecology Centre in LaSalle, on the banks of the Detroit River.
