GLIER's visiting Scholar Dr. John Hartig, has published his latest instalment of Great Lakes Moment: Lessons from the Ashtabula River Cleanup. As the Great Lakes Basin became industrialized, uncontrolled pollution was allowed to take place, causing harm to the rivers, streams and tributaries leading into the Great Lakes, and evenutally causing harm to the Great Lakes themselves. The International Joint Commission’s Great Lakes Water Quality Board identified the Ashtabula River and Harbor in Ohio as a Great Lakes Area of Concern in 1985. After much remedial action, the River and Harbour have seen huge improvements in water and sediment quality.
