TITLE: Design, Manufacturing & Testing of a Novel 3-D Printed 5-Hole Probe for use in an Experimental Fan Rig.

Abstract
This seminar presents the design, manufacturing, and testing of a novel, metal 3D-printed five-hole probe for use in an experimental fan rig. Five-hole probes are widely used in turbomachinery research for their ability to accurately measure flow angles and provide detailed flow field mapping. However, their high cost and limited availability often pose challenges for experimental applications. To address this, the project explored the feasibility of developing a custom five-hole probe from scratch using metal 3-D printing. The design process drew inspiration from existing literature, incorporating modifications to meet specific research needs and adapting to the constraints of 3D printing. Multiple design iterations were assessed through small-scale prototypes to validate geometric accuracy and assess manufacturability. This presentation will provide insights into the probe’s development journey, including the challenges faced, the solutions implemented, and the outcomes of initial testing. The results demonstrate the viability of additive manufacturing for producing complex, high-precision aerodynamic measurement tools at a significantly reduced cost.
