Bright decals on the windows of the CAW Student Centre represent just the first in a series of steps to stamp a sense of identity on the building, says Kim Orr, president of the University of Windsor Students’ Alliance.
“We didn’t like how generic the student centre can feel sometimes,” she says. “Once you’re inside, you feel like you could be anywhere.”
Plans to relocate the University Bookstore to the lower level of the CAW Student Centre are taking shape following the signing of a formal agreement among the University administration, the University of Windsor Students’ Alliance and the Organization of Part-time University Students on Monday.
Space formerly occupied by the Thirsty Scholar will accommodate a large retail book outlet and student café space to create an overall shopping experience.
Dozens of student groups – from fraternities and sororities to charities, social clubs to academic associations – are building interest and membership rolls during Club Days activities in the CAW Student Centre Commons.
The UWindsor entry in Saturday’s Santa Claus parade will offer a Scrooge-eye view, says organizer Sandra Davis. The residence life manager says the float reflects the event’s theme, “A Dickens Christmas.”
“Our spectacular entry depicts Scrooge’s view on Christmas morning,” she says. “As he throws open the shutters, he looks across the town square to see people frolicking in traditional festive activities.”
Volunteers from residence and the University of Windsor Students’ Alliance will skate around a Christmas tree, build a snowman, or join in carolling.
A number of events this week will celebrate the cultural diversity of the campus community.
Viva Cultural Diversity Week is a project of the University of Windsor Students’ Alliance, coinciding with International Education Week.

The hardest part of teaching pumpkin carving is getting students not to start by cutting off the top and scooping out the seeds, says Dick Wood.
The artist was in the CAW Student Centre on Wednesday, offering lessons in relief carving techniques. His appearance was sponsored by the University of Windsor Students’ Alliance.
Wood, based in LaSalle, is a resident artist with the Windsor Wood Carving Museum. He first started carving pumpkins five years ago.
“It’s definitely a seasonal job,” he says.
The Multi-Faith Space in the CAW Student Centre is intended to provide all students, staff and faculty with a place for prayer, meditation and reflection in a context of pluralism.
In addition to a large room, it extends to neighbouring facilities for ablutions.
A joint project of the University and the University of Windsor Students’ Alliance, it was formally inaugurated with a ceremony October 18.

Students, staff and faculty across campus are signing on to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation’s Run for the Cure, Sunday, October 2, on Windsor’s riverfront. The foundation has launched a challenge to Canada’s colleges and universities, inviting them to compete with other institutions in an effort to maximize fundraising to support its vision of creating a future without breast cancer.
Josh Paglione, director of student life for the University of Windsor Students’ Alliance, hopes to draw representation from every club to his team.
