The institution of a moment of reflection to replace prayer during University of Windsor Convocation ceremonies will create a more inclusive atmosphere, says Kaye Johnson, director of the Office of Human Rights, Equity and Accessibility.
“We operate to make things as inclusive as possible—widening the circle,” she says. “A moment of silent reflection will allow people to use this time as they need to, not as someone else decides.”
UWindsor faculty and staff members are invited to participate in the highlight of the academic year by joining the Volunteer at Convocation initiative.
A joint project of the Department of Human Resources and the Office of the Registrar, it offers employees the opportunity to be involved in a tangible way in the culmination of the student experience.
Cable community television channel, TVCogeco, will air recordings this week made by the Centre for Teaching and Learning of the University’s 97th convocation ceremonies.
Cogeco will show them for cable customers on its channel 11 service in the following timeslots:
Volunteering at convocation gave Danielle Handsor another perspective on the event.
“It was a very rewarding experience,” says the three-time UWindsor grad (BHK 2006, B.Ed 2007, M.Ed 2011). “It was great to interact with our graduates and I learned a lot about the planning and the logistics that go into convocation. It was nice to be behind the scenes.”
The University of Windsor minted more than 3,200 new alumni, and the staff of the Centre for Teaching and Learning was on hand to record the occasion.

Amir Mehrabi, who completed his B.A.Sc. in electrical engineering in August 2011, received the 2012 Governor General’s Silver Medal, given at Spring Convocation to the undergraduate student who has achieved the highest academic standing in the graduating class.

The University of Windsor Alumni Association honoured the exceptional accomplishments of Richard Caron, professor of Mathematics & Statistics in the Faculty of Science, with the Alumni Award for Distinguished Contributions to University Teaching during Convocation on Wednesday, June 13.
The award was established in 1987 to provide incentive and encouragement for achieving excellence and teaching at the University of Windsor.
Krysia Bussiere didn’t have to wait until she graduated for her education in the Visual Arts and the Built Environment program to land her a job. She has a summer position in Toronto working with B+H Architects, the design firm behind the Centre for Engineering Innovation.
When she crosses the stage at Thursday’s Convocation, Bussiere will be among the first class to graduate from the program. She says it has given her a good foundation to build on.
The University of Windsor will confer honorary degrees during its 97th Convocation ceremonies on five individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the advancement of the arts, science, education and law.
