Awards banquet recognizes achievements of student-athletes

Even as she prepares to graduate, Meaghan Pototschnik says Windsor will always be her home.

“I will always be proud to say I am a Lancer,” the fourth-year nursing student said Wednesday as she accepted the DeMarco Award as the top female combining academic and athletic achievement during the annual Evening of Excellence at the St. Clair Centre for the Arts.

The golfer won a second straight provincial individual title while earning A-level grades. Massimo Megna, co-captain of the Lancer men’s soccer team, won the men’s DeMarco Award.

Lancers win third straight national title in women’s basketball

The Lancer women’s basketball team defeated the host Regina Cougars 66-57 Sunday to win Windsor’s third straight Bronze Baby Trophy as Canadian Interuniversity Sport champions.

Guard Korissa Williams was named the tournament’s most valuable player. She told a national audience watching on the Score network that it is “an honour” to play on the squad, which went undefeated through the season. Williams scored 46 points through three games at the tournament.

No. 1 Lancers aim for rare Bronze Baby three-peat

All eyes will be on the University of Windsor Lancers this weekend in Regina as the reigning two-time Canadian Interuniversity Sport women’s basketball champions will look to become only the fourth team in history to claim the Bronze Baby Trophy for a third consecutive year.

The CIS women’s hoops championship gets underway Friday at the University of Regina and concludes Sunday at 4 p.m. local time (6 p.m. ET) with the gold-medal final, live on The Score Television Network.

Pre-game ceremony Wednesday to see basketball coach receive Diamond Jubilee Medal

Two Lancer head coaches will receive the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal on Wednesday, January 23. Women’s basketball coach Chantal Vallée and cross-country and track coach Dennis Fairall—each of whom won Canadian Interuniversity championships in 2012—will be honoured for the outstanding leadership they provide varsity student-athletes.

The Canadian government created the medal to mark significant achievements in celebration of the jubilee year, marking the 60th anniversary of the Queen’s ascension to the throne.

Women’s basketball coach to speak to networking group

Chantal Vallée, head coach of Lancer women’s basketball, will share some secrets to her success during a dinner meeting of the Women’s Economic Forum on Tuesday, October 23.

The group, which offers women an opportunity to network and socialize, promises its members that Vallée, whose team repeated as Canadian Interuniversity Sport champions in March, will provide instruction in how to win, despite the odds.

Networking event to benefit community youth leadership program

Lancer women’s basketball head coach Chantal Vallée is among the community leaders who will attend a networking event for Windsor’s young adults, students and professionals on Thursday, September 27.

The GenNext committee of the United Way offers young leaders a chance to meet and learn from their peers and mentors, as well as opportunities to volunteer and better the community, says coordinator Anjana Jacob, a 2011 graduate of the Odette School of Business.

Lancer coach to provide television commentary for Olympic women’s basketball coverage

Chantal Vallée, head coach of Lancer women’s basketball, will try a new experience this summer, providing on-air analysis during CTV’s broadcast of Olympic women’s basketball.

“I am thrilled about this new adventure and for the chance to share in the Olympic Games this year,” says Vallée. “I'm honoured that CTV and producer Gord Cutler has given me this opportunity. It will be great exposure for our program, our university and our city. I am looking forward to this new challenge and to experience the Olympics in a different capacity than solely a viewer and fan.”

Chamber of Commerce recognizes business excellence

The Windsor-Essex Regional Chamber of Commerce honoured several members of the UWindsor community Wednesday at the Ciociaro Club during its annual Business Excellence Awards presentations.
