Hoda ElMaraghy and Tarek AlGeddawy figured they needn’t look any further than an ordinary household appliance like a washing machine to demonstrate how manufacturers can respond to growing consumer demand for increased product variety but still remain profitable.

Meet Mehrdad Shademan for the first time and it’s easy to get the impression he’s a fairly quiet, low-key type of guy. He wasn’t so mild-mannered, however, the day he found out he was the recipient of a Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship.
“I was screaming and yelling,” he says in the graduate student office he shares with colleagues in the Ed Lumley Centre for Engineering Innovation. “Everybody was pretty shocked.”
Steve Kessel was attending a conference in Vancouver last year when he went in to a local restaurant and noticed that shark fin soup had been scratched off the menu. He wasn’t sure if it was simply because it wasn’t available, but the ecologist in him hoped the eatery was taking the moral high ground by voluntary banning it from the establishment.

It may be America’s largest organization for international aid, but the U.S. Agency for International Development’s humanitarian efforts are “strongly influenced, and often trumped by its mandate to advance American foreign policies,” according to a new book authored by a UWindsor political science professor.
It may not sound like a princely sum to most, but $700 goes a long way at the Windsor Youth Centre.
That's how much CJAM volunteers and staffers raised last December 22 when they held their annual Joe Strummer Day—held on the anniversary of the death of the former front man of the punk band the Clash—to raise funds and awareness about poverty and homelessness issues in the university campus radio station's listening area of Windsor and Detroit.
Peter Way has spent more than 17 years researching, thinking and writing abount an 18th century war that took less than half that time to fight, so receiving an award that acknowledges his painstaking efforts seems more than fitting.
Ashley Paterson clearly remembers the first day of one of her classes when all of the students had to say a little about themselves. A boy in the class introduced himself, noted that he was from the Middle East, and added the caveat “And I’m not a terrorist.”
“That’s an example that really highlights the importance of identity,” said Paterson, a PhD student in psychology. “You could see how he was struggling with his cultural identity in a society that so often discriminates against people.”

Some of the university’s top scholars and researchers will be acknowledged at a special ceremony tomorrow afternoon.
The 2012 Awards for Excellence in Research, Scholarship and Creative Activity will be held at 4:30 p.m. in the Ambassador Auditorium in the CAW Student Centre. The campus community is welcome to attend. Refreshments will be provided.
