Physics professor Steven Rehse says his colleagues in every discipline should take the opportunity to attend a pep rally to welcome new students, Wednesday in the St. Denis Centre.
“When you see the excitement of the young students, it reminds you of how exciting it is to get a university education,” he says. “Last year, I went and I sat with the students from my department. It was fun to see their enthusiasm.”
Dr. Rehse led the physics orientation session, mandatory for new students, as part of his role in recruiting to the program.
“Coming out for an event like this sends an important message to students,” he says. “It helps them feel they are part of a community—an academic community composed of faculty and students. They like to see their professors right from the start.”
Sherry Ketterer of the alumni affairs office says last year’s Welcoming Celebration was “a blast.”
“It was fun seeing all the energy the students bring,” she says. “I love to see the new students. That’s why we’re here!”
She is looking forward to attending again and says the event is a highlight of the campus calendar.
Welcoming Celebration begins at 3 p.m. Wednesday, September 4, to follow the program orientation sessions. It is open to all members of the campus community.
