A workshop Wednesday helped ready students prepare for practicum placements as nurse practitioners.
The Integrative Practicum Preparation Workshop for Nurse Practitioners was offered by Continuing Education in collaboration with the Faculty of Nursing.
“It’s an effective hands-on opportunity to hone their skills and reinforce the knowledge they’ve acquired in their course work,” said nursing professor Sherry Morrell, who conducted the session along with Kim McAlpine.
“We’re building confidence and preparing these students for the experiential addition to their classroom work.”
Students pursuing the graduate diploma in primary health care nurse practitioner seek to extend their skills and education through the nurse practitioner designation. Their practicum component will see them placed in hospitals, clinics, and other medical institutions for 12 weeks over the summer.
“This is a great example of collaboration between Continuing Education and faculty to bring relevant offerings to students,” said Meagan Haugh, marketing coordinator for continuing education.
“That’s our purpose here, to connect with students as well as the broader community to determine where we can add professional development and facilitate opportunities for lifelong learning.”
Next on the docket is the Summer Institute of Clinical Health Research, five days of in-depth exploration of the principles and applications of clinical health research. Participants will engage experts in discussion of such topics as qualitative research and evidence-based practice, epidemiologic research designs, clinical trials, and statistical modeling techniques.
Registration is open to professionals in any field, by the day or for the entire program. UWindsor grad students in nursing and other disciplines may enrol for academic credit. Registrants who complete the five-day program will receive a certificate of completion from University of Windsor Continuing Education.
The conference-format sessions will run June 17 to 21 on the UWindsor campus. Find details on the continuing education website.
